![]() It is often diagnosed as psychosis or an overactive imagination. Others call it an ‘escape in times of distress’. Some psychologists describe it as a ‘coping mechanism’ against trauma and loneliness. Healthline describes maladaptive daydreaming as intense daydreaming that distracts a person from their real life. It is different from the hallucinations caused by schizophrenia, a medical condition that’s also about misplaced thoughts, feelings and behaviours. As the name of the condition suggests, I am daydreaming perpetually. ‘Time, Space, and Potatoes’ is a poem in which I recount my experiences as a maladaptive daydreamer.
